In this case study, Adrian will guide you through the process of how Redboat worked with CSIRO to develop the script, concept and designs for, and to produce the animation for, The Australian National Outlook. The ANO is a first attempt to understand and analyse the connections in Australia’s physical economy many decades into the future. The report was created by CSIRO to help Australia navigate the future.

Finding the value in scientific reports is a significant challenge for most busy policy makers and the general public. This case study explores how 2D animation was used to turn the key findings of this 56 page scientific report that was featured on the front cover of Nature journal into in a series of engaging animations for all audiences.

Getting the first three stages (briefing, script & concept development, and design) is the critical to whether or not your animation will succeed, and whether or not you’ll enjoy the process. This presentation aims to show how these first three stages directly influence the actual production stage of animation, and how creative flexibility can still be maintained during production.

The session will include a supplementary 12 page PDF digital handout of the 5 stages of animation.

This session is for:

  • Science communicators considering using animation to tell stories and ideas.
  • Managers seeking to make efficient and effective use of the medium of animation.
  • Professionals who need to work with animation companies or animators.
  • Animators seeking to improve their project management skills.
  • Anybody wanting to see how the animation for a pretty cool CSIRO project came together.

How does this session contribute to ‘Seeing Science Differently’?
