Abstract

In 2015–16 the Australian Government invested approximately $3.5 billion in university research. While Australia’s research performs strongly on indicators of quality, it underperforms in measures of university and end-user collaboration for research. In 2016 an Engagement and Impact Assessment consultation was undertaken as part of the National Innovation and Science Agenda, to better understand how we can measure research engagement and impact, and how this translates into economic, social, environmental, cultural or other benefits. This presentation will highlight outcomes from this consultation, how recommendations are being implemented in 2017, and the potential role for science communication and community engagement in this framework.
