Clare Mullen

Climate Communicator
Bureau of Meteorology

Clare MullenClare Mullen works at the Bureau of Meteorology as a Communication Adviser. She is a meteorologist with a Masters in Communications. Her current role includes being producer for the monthly Climate and Water Outlook video, which presents long term rainfall outlooks and is shown on ABC TV’s Landline program.

After nearly 30 years at the Bureau, career highlights range from giving weather briefings at a Madonna concert to checking aviation forecasts in the cockpit with Qantas pilots; as well as meeting people from all around Australia and answering their weather questions helping out at numerous conferences and trade displays. Clare has even had her own cyclone! (Tropical cyclone Clare, 5–10 Jan 2006)

Clare’s favourite part of the job is talking to people about what the Bureau does, and hearing how it makes a difference in people’s lives. It doesn’t matter how scientifically clever the Bureau is—if the people outside the building don’t understand the information, or how to use the products, the job is only half done. Clare helps provide that bridge.
