Abstract

In this session the Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC) will present a few select case studies we have helped deliver to the mainstream media. In particular we will share what turns a good story into a media storm. Case studies will be selected from various scientific research areas and their appeal to different media types will be highlighted. We will also show you how to use Scimex.org, Australia’s Breaking Science News Portal, to maximise story uptake by mainstream media. This session is a must for any researcher who wants to highlight their science and any communicator who wants to pick up tips and tricks to getting the most out of a story. n.b. examples may include robot babies, skinny jeans and fish porn!

This session will contribute to seeing science differently by allowing you to step into the shoes of a breaking news journalist and see what flies in the rapid news cycle.
